About the Public Service Exchange

The CIPA Public Service Exchange is a unique service-learning partnership with nonprofit and government agencies, the majority of which are located in the Ithaca/Tompkins County area. These agencies provide real world projects for fellows to work on.   In the process, fellows gain practical work experience while completing their M.P.A coursework.

Participation in the Public Service Exchange may fulfill the practical experience requirement of the M.P.A.  In addition, students may choose to expand their Exchange project in the spring for use in their capstone M.P.A. professional writing project.

Public Service Exchange Course for CIPA Fellows
CIPA fellows who wish to participate in the Service Exchange must register for CRP 6790—Approaches to Consulting, Research, Evaluation, and Program Development.   This preparatory seminar course is followed by a directed field experience, where students address a problem, issue, or opportunity for a client using a consultative approach.  Students operate much as if they were employees of a traditional public-sector consulting firm.
